Five Fortunes by Beth Gutcheon
Rating 4.5 (BN) 3.5 (Amazon)
Synopsis (from BN.com)
Witty, wise, and hope-filled, Five Fortunes is a large-hearted tale of five vivid and unforgettable women who know where they've been but have no idea where they're going. A lively octogenarian, a private investigator, a mother and daughter with an unresolved past, and a recently widowed politician's wife share little else except a thirst for new dreams, but after a week at the luxurious health spa known as "Fat Chance" their lives will be intertwined in ways they couldn't have imagined. At a place where doctors, lawyers, spoiled housewives, movie stars, and captains of industry are stripped of the social markers that keep them from really seeing one another, unexpected friendships emerge, reminding us of the close links between the rich and the poor, fortune and misfortune, and the magic of chance.

First Meeting Details
Here is what I am proposing for the first meeting:
Meeting Location: I thought a neutral location would be good, so I am selecting
Barnes & Noble at the Summit
4100 Summit Plaza Dr
Louisville KY 40241
When: Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 10:00 am
Book...to be decided.
I am proposing this date to get us started. I think we should discuss what days will work best for us and set up a routine meeting time (for example the first Thursday of the month or second Saturday of the month). We will meet in the cafe area which will give us an opportunity to purchase some coffee!

Book Selections
To give us the most possible time to read the books we will pick 3 - 4 months of books (one book a month). Potential books will be submitted by each members and all the active members will vote on the books (active members will be defined as members who have been to 50% or more of the past meetings or who have submitted comments on the blog on the book with their book rating). This ensures that active members are selecting the books that we will read next.
Paperbacks vs Hardback books. In past clubs we have limited the book selection to paperback books only, but I think we should leave it open to what the members what during each book selection.
Book priorities/selection. When the time arrives to select the books members will submit the books and they will be put on the blog with a brief synopsis of the book. Members will fill out a spreadsheet prioritizing the books starting with the one they most want to read as 1 increasing to the number of books on the list. The priority spreadsheets will be tallied and the books with the lowest total score will be selected as the next readings.
Let me know what you think! I am open to new ideas!!

Welcome!
Welcome to the One More Page Cafe book club!! We are a club that meets in Louisville, Kentucky.
Some history on me: I started a book club in Champaign, Illinois called Novella Cafe the book club carries on, but I have moved to Louisville. So now it's time to start a new book club. I have wanted to belong to a book club for a while but haven't been able to find one. So I thought I would start one! I have missed the comradary that we had with the Novella Cafe women and am excited to have a group to discuss books with.
If you want to see some of the books that I like reading you can go to my blog Reading Derby. I think we should limit the group to 10 - 15. Please let me know what you think or if you are interested.
